Scientists' experiences with journalists have often been marked
by disappointment and disillusion. This ill-feeling often arises from ignorance about how the media operate and what journalists need for a story. With so many complex public issues involving science, clear communication of technical information is more important than ever. Fortunately, there are simple steps researchers can take to reduce the chance of hype or misrepresentation and improve media coverage for the public.
