For many scientists, reaching important lay audiences--including the public, the media, institutional leaders, donors, and even colleagues in other disciplines--means mastering what seems like a foreign language. It is possible to become adept at "lay language," by understanding how audiences process information, by learning the visual vernacular of communications, and by using the powerful tools of new media.
