Another task force of the NIH Director Advisory Committee investigated the informatics needs of the NIH community at large including academic research institutions. One need that emerged is the shortage of trained quantitative scientists. The current system of training these quantitative scientists is not keeping up with the demand. The process of funding NIH training grants has some unique challenges that make it difficult to launch and sustain training programs in the quantitative sciences.
