For decades, NIH has supported a successful training program for biological and clinician scientists. Despite the recent growth of biomedical research, especially in the field of genomics, the pipeline of PhD level training exceeds substantially the projected faculty positions. Many graduates are not directly involved in research at all. However, there are many indicators of a shortage of trained researchers in quantitative sciences, needed to manage and analyze the data being generated.
