The presentation will discuss the findings from the analysis of data collected based on a natural experiment in Japan. Using panel data, the results of my analysis suggest that the launch of technology transfer office has a mixed effect on joint research. Specifically, the activity of technology transfer office, measured by number of patents granted by the office, is negatively associated with the amount of joint research (measured by co-authorship of articles) between the universities and firms.
