This presentation defines community-engaged scholarship (CES) and identifies persistent institutional challenges. For example, CES is regarded by some in universities as “service” or “activism,” and not as rigorous scholarship; common metrics for judging quality and productivity of scholarship tend to inadequately capture CES; and few CES professional development pathways exist. Data from national initiatives in the US and Canada that are testing specific solutions will be shared.
