Since 1976, AAAS has provided objective, authoritative analysis of the federal R&D investment to the scientific and engineering communities and policy makers. In that tradition, this first look at the proposed FY 2012 R&D investment will include a brief summary of the complete FY 2012 budget for context before looking at the requested funding levels for R&D in the major R&D agencies as well as selected cross-cutting initiatives. New programs and programs for which significant funding changes are proposed will be highlighted. The FY 2012 R&D investment will likely be characterized by the balance between funding administration initiatives such as increased funding for basic research agencies and clean energy research and fiscal responsibility including the requested 5% cut in the discretionary budget of non-security agencies.
