Social media is no longer “new” media; for many scientists, social media is a routine part of their personal, professional, and public faces. Some research suggests use of social media can increase citations and otherwise enhance one’s personal brand. However, little empirical work has addressed strategic communication goals through social media. In this rapidly changing context, how can scientists and communicators design and implement effective public engagement plans that incorporate social media?
