Communicating Science Online: Scientist-Media Interactions

Communication technologies have increased the ability of audience to engage with STEM issues, particularly online. In a context in which science and media are increasingly coupled, relationships between scientists, media, and publics have come to the fore. As leaders of scientific communities call for greater public engagement and communication, understanding the relationships between these groups is increasingly important. This talk provides an overview of scientist-media interactions, identifying factors that motivate and deter scientists’ engagement efforts, and offers some directions for future research in science communication.
