This panel will discuss ways that academic researchers are connecting with public audiences on key social issues. I will share some operating principles that I use in when speaking and collaborating with companies, agencies, and the public around climate change and ecosystem health. Two are individual strategies. 1) Practice: I make time to engage in public writing, collaboration or consultation on a regular, consistent basis, and I think strategically about matching message to audience. 2) Prep: I come prepared for each engagement with a goal that is clear in my mind, and I take time to do background research for each activity. One principle is communal. 1) Promote: Established scientists, though mentoring and influence within research institutions, should provide early-career scientists with opportunities and rewards for their engagement activities. I’ll give an example for each principle.
