What Scientists – and the Scientific Community – Should Do When Grants are Challenged

Saturday, February 18, 2017: 8:00 AM-9:30 AM
Room 206 (Hynes Convention Center)
Patricia Brennan, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Amherst, MA
In 2013, the Internet was filled with commentary on Dr. Brennan’s National Science Foundation-funded study on duck genitalia, with some labeling it as “wasteful government spending.” Dr. Brennan spoke out in defense of her research and the importance of defending basic science through the popular media and scientific literature; she also developed a course on demonstrating the importance of federally funded research. She will discuss her experiences and the response by the scientific community.
