Advances in genetics and bioinformatics have been exploited by Dr Rappuoli to sequence a pathogen’s genome and screen for vaccine targets using bioinformatics. First used to develop Serogroup B meningococcus, which stopped a devastating epidemic in New Zealand, Dr Rappuoli has pioneered reverse vaccinology and is applying this method to other elusive bacterial vaccines.
