Medical informatics is a burgeoning field. On the one hand, patients rely on it to increase the effectiveness of their interactions with the health system, but depend on privacy policy to protect their rights. On the other hand, medical practice and policy draw on big datasets regularly. This presentation from an AAAS Fellow -- co-chair of the Big Data Affinity Group -- addresses the data needs of health policy and the skills required for its effective use.
