Homeland Security has pioneered in data mining techniques to pull together disparate data to provide clues to dangers. How are such data used in policy? Do the individuals who work in this space have to be multidisciplinary in their skills and perspectives? What kind of training do they need to receive, on and off the job, to be effective? A co-chair of the AAAS Fellows Big Data Affinity Group addresses these questions from the perspective of a next-generation policy analyst.
