In addition to investments by the US government in Big Data R&D, the White House and the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) issued two reports on big data and privacy in 2014.  The US Government Accountability Office is working on a strategic project on Big Data and its implications for US federal entities and society overall.  This study is intended to ascertain key trends in Big Data (current and projected) as well as ascertain the future opportunities and risks associated with them, particularly as they pertain to implications for the federal government.
