At lunch at the Ideas Lab, Jessica Winter and Peter Kner speculate whether she could find a way to make photoswitchable quantum dots that he could then use to increase image resolution in Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy (STORM). The pair recruit two biologists to provide key subcellular imaging challenges and a science communicator to help everyone work together. The result: QSTORM, a ground-breaking effort to make molecular movies at the nanoscale inside nerve cells and muscle fibers.
