Assessment of research outputs is a complicated effort, particularly as more scholarly content distribution is taking place online. This provides a variety of new opportunities for analysis and assessment. In order to make sense of these data and compare them across domains, the community needs to develop common definitions, assessment criteria, and data aggregation methodology. NISO is launching an initiative to develop these standards and best practices, which will be the focus of this talk.
