I will describe various past efforts at horizon scanning, such as Global Trends 2030, that use unclassified information and how many such projects have demonstrated that science and technology are critical to the outcome of most geo-political scenarios. I will also touch upon lessons learned from these endeavors, the effect of context (e.g., geo-political scenarios vs. an STI focus) on the process and outcomes, and areas of potential exploration for future efforts.
