Professor Hassan as the former Executive Director of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing Work (formerly TWAS) will introduce and set the context for the session by surveying the rapid transformation that Africa is undergoing in its economies, population growth and urbanisation while hunger and poverty continue for many, and the role that the biosciences in the new genetic technologies can play in increasing agricultural efficiencies to combat these challenges.
