Introduction: Studies on the Impact of Academic Knowledge in the Innovation System

The presentation will discuss the impact of academic knowledge on innovation system. Initially the prior studies based on quantitative data will be reviewed. Then, sevaral pieces of results of the Survey on Research Activities of Private Corporations in Japan, performed annually by NISTEP will be presented. The differences by sectors of industry in the extent the corporate inventors count on basic research as sources of innovation will also be discussed according to the recent surveys.
