Farms are biological production systems deeply embedded in the natural environment and rural social systems. As communication, transportation, and production technologies evolve,  farms are increasingly directly integrated into the world's urban economies and social systems. The rapid pace and extent of this integration accelerates and amplifies difficulties and conflicts surrounding technological choice in the evolving world food system.
