Science-based professionals (SBP) often use hands-on materials to help non-scientists build knowledge. I will discuss the results of a cost-benefits analysis that compares museums’ investments in hands-on exhibits with the impacts they have on visiting, non-scientist publics. Visitor-scientist interactions have the greatest depth when designed to facilitate active engagement and inquiry. But prior training of SBPs is essential to maximize the experience for them and their visitors.
