Making "things" from "stuff" (manufacturing) is paradoxically an integral part of the Post-Industrial, Post-Scientific, Knowledge-based economy of the 21st c. The old dichotomy between manufacturing and services is being supplanted by new modes of production. This paper will illustrate the increasingly tight interdependence of manufacturing and services and examine its implications for science and engineering education, technological innovation and change, and science and technology policies.
