Cancer is an evolutionary process. Every human cancer is caused by somatic mutation and selection of cells. The mathematical theory of evolution can therefore provide quantitative insights into cancer progression. In this talk I will give an overview of the evolutionary dynamics of cancer. I will discuss accumulation of driver and passenger mutations during cancer progression and the role of various forms of genetic instability. I will discuss success or failure of targeted cancer therapy including the evolution of resistance.
