The State Department has long engaged universities in its science diplomacy, e.g., featuring them in bilateral STI meetings, working to reduce impediments to their international collaborations, and bolstering State’s STI capacity by borrowing their scientists as Fellows. I will discuss their ongoing value to science diplomacy vis-à-vis U.S. leadership on global STI challenges, the spread of democratic values inherent in STI, and a collaborative advantage for the U.S. in international innovation ecosystems.
