The presentation will review the history of efforts to measure the economic and social impacts of S&T investments, focusing primarily on economic analysis in the United States. It will draw from presentations and commissioned papers for a National Academies' workshop, measuring the Impacts of Federal Investments in Research, held in 2011. It will distill lessons for continuing efforts to assess the value of research, identifying promising and unproductive and counterproductive lines of inquiry.
