Many great apes raised in captivity show behavioral abnormalities akin to human psychiatric disorders, including major depression, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Early maternal separation and other adverse rearing conditions represent shared causes of psychopathology. This presentation compares psychopathology in humans and other apes, proposing an interdisciplinary approach of primatology and psychiatry, ultimately to the benefit of both.
