Mathematical analysis of data about tumor size and biophysical and biochemical analysis of circulating tumor cells helped fuel the discovery of ‘self-seeding,’ which may be a major mechanism in the growth of several kinds of cancers. A lifetime of combining clinical and mathematical insight has led to new paradigm shifts and may yield promising new treatment schemes.
