Many faculty design course syllabi by adopting a textbook, modifying its order of topics, and providing
students with additional logistical information. In contrast, backward design begins with the development of clear learning
goals, design of measures that provide evidence of student learning, and then development of content and pedagogies to
optimize meeting of learning goals. This session will focus on the principles of backward design and enable participants to
practice these techniques.
