The scientific community has had difficulty responding to what we might call “the challenge of the lone dissenter.” These individuals are put forward to “prove” there is no consensus, and are often portrayed as heroes for challenging the mainstream view. This presentation draws on insights from history and science studies to distinguish between disagreement, dissent and denial, as well as for distinguishing between “mavericks” and “mules.”
