American Electic Power (AEP) is one of the largest generators of electricity in the United States.  Most of the Company's generation is coal-fired, and in the process ~10 million tons per year of coal combustion residuals (CCRs) are produced at AEP.  AEP uses ~36% of the CCRs beneficially.  FGD gypsum is used as a wallboard feedstock.  Flyash is used in concrete, and there are many other benefical uses.  CCRs that are not used are disposed in permitted landfills and in licensed impoundments under state environmental permitting programs.  Groundwater monitoring is conducted to assess environmental conditions at disposal sites.

Efforts are directed at protecting the environment, while at the same time responsibly realizing the positives associated with beneficial use of CCRs, and of compliant disposal of those fractions that are not used.

The presentation will deal with the many positive ways that solid byproducts from coal combustion are used beneficially.
