The Anthropocene, our very own geological epoch, has human civilization as its characteristic feature. The history of civilization is a footnote to the Neolithic invention of agriculture, an activity that is massively contingent upon geology and one that has made us a planet-scarring, geological force. In utilizing soil we are the biosphere’s enemy within. Any transition to sustainability requires the adaptation of our behavior to the consequences of that fact.
