Biodiversity, the variability of genetics, species, and ecosystems, underlies global sustainability. We are, however, destroying biodiversity at a rate that has not occurred since the end of the Cretaceous Period. The trend will have severe consequences for human futures. Habitat destruction, global climate change, and invasive aliens are important in driving extinction, and we must urgently deal with them and their root causes in order to attain sustainability in a rich and diverse world.
