The Director of the new USDA National Institutes of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Roger Beachy, is a pioneer in genetic engineering of crop plants for resistance to viruses and a long-time advocate for reform of government regulations that control the release of transgenic plants. He brings a scientist’s as well as an administrator’s perspective to evaluating the safety of GMOs and the need to make new transgenic foods such as fruits and vegetables available to people throughout the world.
