The Director of the new USDA National Institutes of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Roger Beachy, is a pioneer in genetic engineering of crop plants for resistance to viruses and a long-time advocate for reform of government regulations that control the release of transgenic plants. He brings a scientistís as well as an administratorís perspective to evaluating the safety of GMOs and the need to make new transgenic foods such as fruits and vegetables available to people throughout the world.
