The metaphor of the pipeline and our focus on gender exclusively constrains our ability to see nuance in how people experience and navigate inequality in the culture of STEM and IT specifically. Focusing on women, and assuming a universal experience among different types of women, limits our understanding of the role gender plays in scientific attachment. We must be specific as to which women, under conditions, with what tools, successfully manage to navigate science or leave.
