Solar geoengineering research could offer an extraordinary social return on investment. If it proved effective, some estimates suggest that it could cut the negative global impacts of climate change in half, providing enormous welfare benefits of at least 1% of global GDP by mid-century. Yet, research into geoengineering has been limited. There is no US government research program, despite recommendations by NAS in 1992 and 2015. This presentation will make the case for geoengineering research.
