IoT has the potential to enhance the process of doing science, but it also creates an increasing dependence on the underlying software and hardware infrastructure. Great strides have been made to increase the security and reliability of core software infrastructure but cybersecurity remains a challenge. New methods for designing software and hardware systems are required to create the level of understanding and quality assurance needed by next generation IoT applications.
