We are in the midst of a worldwide epidemic of obesity and diabetes. Despite best efforts most humans struggle to lose weight and maintain weight loss. General dietary guidelines do not take into account differences in metabolism and microbiomes between individuals. Integrating metabolic responses to specific food items with microbiome information can provide effective personal dietary suggestions. Understanding how genes, diet and microbiomes interact will be key to a healthy metabolic future.
