A recent National Academies report designed to help chemists conduct public outreach features a communication framework that is widely applicable. Funded by the National Science Foundation, the study applies strategies drawn from informal learning and science communication. This talk will present an overview of the findings, along with its background. It will highlight research on learning and communication; use of evaluation to refine goals and demonstrate effectiveness; and the committee's recommendations, especially an evidence-based framework for the design and implementation of communication activities.
