Stand Up and Stand Out: Positive Self-Presentation Strategies for Career Success

Saturday, February 13, 2016: 3:30 PM-4:30 PM
Washington 1 (Marriott Wardman Park)
This workshop is designed to help graduate students, postdocs, and faculty understand the influence of gender, work culture, and psychology on career advancement; recognize common forms of self-sabotage; learn to silence self-criticism and increase positive self-talk; and learn positive and innovative approaches to self-presentation and communication in gendered environments. Women in particular tend to be less integrated into male-dominated academic departments and face additional challenges with impression management and persuasive communication. Workshop attendees will participate in part of a resilience-building program that offers strategies for thriving in competitive and often “chilly” science and engineering programs.
