The African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) was established in 2003 in South Africa by Neil Turok, and has since expanded to include several additional centers across Africa devoted to applied mathematics and graduate education. I will review the history of AIMS, recent developments, and the potential that mathematics holds for developing countries in Africa.
