We review the overtone series and show how it gives us the rich chord vocabulary of tonal music, and also gives us "blue notes" not well-rendered by keyboard instruments. We discuss the imperfect tuning of the equally tempered scale and show how musicians who sing, or play instruments free of keys or frets, can achieve more perfect harmony.
