Spurred on by the commitments to building an inclusive STEM ecosystem as codified in Europe’s Horizon 2020 and the National Science Foundation’s CEOSE report and Broader Impacts initiatives, the roadmap articulated in the 3rd Gender Summit-North America sets out an impressive call to action to university leaders as we strive to engage and nurture the diverse talent in our midst and leverage that diversity for excellence.  To illustrate the roadmap, I will focus on three arenas in which higher education can take forward-looking action – the institutionalization of family friendly policies;  attention to the talent and experiences of women of color; and enhancing broader impacts on critical societal challenges through broadening participation of a diverse STEM community in interdisciplinary, cross-sector collaboration.  In tandem, actions such as these and others articulated in the Roadmap hold substantial promise both for the quality and sustainability of our STEM human capital and the innovations we strive to produce, as well as the public support and appreciation of our contributions.
