Electric power grids are excellent examples of emerging ultra-large scale systems, and their control places new requirements on sensing, data management, analytics, and networking, in addition to requiring new methods of control and coordination. These then imply new computing architectures to support grid management in a distributed environment that can include tens of millions of intelligent endpoints. Design of such systems demands strong architectural formalism to avoid unintended behavior.
