Patterns of Innovation and the Role of Innovation Hubs

This paper discusses the history of innovation as it is revealed through an analysis of the US patent database. I highlights different types of technological innovation and analyzes what role specific metropolitan regions—innovation hubs—have played in the long-term patterns of technological, scientific and social change.
