This paper addresses the relationship between conceptual and institutional change. Do institutions follow ideas or are there institutional settings that facilitate innovations in science? In today’s age of interdisciplinary science these question have a new urgency. We analyze the phase of rapid expansion and diversification of the Max Planck Society after the German reunification to highlight the complex interplay between conceptual and institutional factors in fostering scientific innovation.
