A former Marine, O’Neil-Dunne applies advanced LIDAR aerial surveillance and data informatics to study regional forests. At the IBIV Ideas Lab, he joins his remote sensing expertise with Washington University computer scientists, artist Ruth West, and later, New York City urban forestry conservationists, to produce the first ever smartphone app capable of accurately tracking urban tree growth and change over time, thereby providing a new tool to citizen scientists, city planners, and arborists.
