John Ioannidis’s PLoS paper “Why most published research findings are false” is widely quoted and discussed. It provides the technical explanation why this lack of reproducibility happens and illustrates the occurrence in clinical examples. He also has some suggestions for how this might be corrected. This paper has stimulated many subsequent papers and has in the last nine years been cited nearly 2000 times
