How Quantum Mechanics Can Help Solve the World's Energy Problems

Saturday, 14 February 2015: 10:00 AM-11:30 AM
Room LL20C (San Jose Convention Center)
Emily A. Carter, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ
Quantum mechanics can reveal the spatial and energy distributions of electrons in matter. Those distributions determine the behavior of molecules and materials, including properties that are key to producing clean, efficient, sustainable sources of energy. A brief survey of promising new quantum mechanics methods will be given, along with applications to energy technologies ranging from fuel cells to fusion.
