This presentation will give an overview of results from a European container security demonstration project, CONTAIN. Innovations include enhanced positioning using EGNOS, improved container status monitoring, and the development of a secure information repository for logistics information, using a common ontology and data structure. CONTAIN also investigates the possibilities to optimize freight routes based on the security data collected, the use of camera surveillance to verify the integrity of containers, and new techniques for verifying that empty containers are in fact empty.
The main contribution is enhanced methods and tools for a risk based approach to container profiling and targeting. By using an all-sources fusion based approach, it is possible to improve the selection of which containers to inspect or scan for dangerous and illegal substances.
